Why You Need A Beauty Detox

Not working out enough? Drinking a bit too much? Addicted to conventional makeup and skincare? While we might not think of skincare as part of a detox, what we put on our skin is just as important as what we put in our body! Here our VIP wellness partner, Juice Beauty, walks you through the steps to a truly thorough detox (skincare included):

Get with the plan…

Start by drinking a full 8-10 oz glass of filtered water before every meal, work out for 30-60 minutes every morning (power walking is fine) and replace one packaged food staple a week with a “whole” non-processed food. Then, each day replace one food—either a dairy, a fruit or a vegetable with an organic alternative.

Once you’ve started to getting active, introducing healthier foods and drinking more water, it’s time to think about your skin! Take Juice Beauty’s CLEAN BEAUTY Challenge to discover which toxic ingredients are in your conventional products, so you can decide whether you want to switch to safer and cleaner alternatives.

Why should you detox your skin?

Because it’s important! According to a study from researchers at UC Berkeley, 100 teenage girls from Salinas, California tested 25-45% lower in chemical levels after swapping out their conventional chemical-based products for natural and organic ones! The significant drop occurred in just three days! Imagine the benefits from changing your routine for a month, or even for life.

Which products and ingredients should you seek to detox?

When looking at the labels of your beauty and skincare products, try to stay away from parabens, petroleum/propylene or butylene glycols, phthalates, sulfates, PEGs, TEA, DEA, GMO, silicones, talc, artificial dyes or synthetic fragrances. For a complete list, go to Juice Beauty’s Clean Beauty page, to discover the full “Unacceptable Ingredients” list.

Try to turn to organic foods and products to limit your body’s absorption of pesticides. Juice Beauty uses USDA Certified Organic Ingredients and follows the guidelines of one of the most rigorous organic standards in the world, COPA (California Organic Products Act). That assures that the majority of all ingredients in your products are made with Certified Organic Ingredients—just what you need to start the detox!

Where do you start, what should you get rid of?

Kick off your skincare detox by switching your sodium lauryl sulfate cleanser for an organic cleanser packed with powerful antioxidants. Try any of Juice Beauty’s Cleansers—if you haven’t tried an oil cleanser, Juice’s Stem Cellular Cleansing Oil is amazing; use it with an organic cleansing cloth. End with a steamy hot organic or bamboo washcloth placed over your face for a real spa-fresh feel. It’s important to know that you can achieve the efficacy you are seeking without compromising your skin.

Two to three times a week after cleansing, exfoliate away those clogged pores by using the ultimate detox product (and one of Kate faves) Juice Beauty’s Green Apple Peel, which comes in Full Strength, Sensitive, Blemish Clearing and even one for Pregnancy.

What next?

Change your daily SPF 30 BB or CC Cream—eliminate chemical sunscreens (oxybenzone, etc.)—and move to pure zinc. As for a moisturizer alternative, instead of petroleum fillers, artificial dyes and fragrance, move over to a rich moisturizer with antioxidant packed organic oils; your skin will thank you.

Finally, switch out your makeup; Transition from “eating” conventional chemical lipstick to lipsticks made with certified organic ingredients. It’s been estimated that a woman can eat up to 9 lbs. of lipstick over her lifetime! So make sure you are eating healthful ingredients!
